About Hardees

On September 3rd, 1960, Hardee’s opened its doors in Greenville, North Carolina. Hardee’s hamburgers was founded at that time by a man named Wilbur Hardy. Although it is commonly stated that this was his first restaurant, he had already operated several, including one called Silo.

Hardy conceived the concept for what would later become Hardee’s only after the first McDonald’s opened nearby. Hardy’s hamburgers opened 11 months after his McDonald’s inspiration, and business was brisk. Hardy had generated a profit of nearly nine thousand five hundred dollars in his first four months in business, not bad for a time when hamburgers were fifteen cents each.

Driven by his success, Wilber Hardy began making preparations to develop his new corporation after meeting Leonard Rawls, a late-twentieth-century accountant, and Jim Gardner, the son of a famous dairy owner in Rocky Mountain North Carolina.

The three guys believed that by selling franchises, Hardee’s might grow into a huge chain, and that they could profit from it. Wilber Hardy was ecstatic about the notion, and he and his two new partners signed a handshake agreement to merge Hardee’s drive-ins.

The second Hardee’s opened in Rocky Mount the following year, in May 1961. Rawls and Gardner led this one, which was likewise a huge success.

However, Hardy Rawls and Gardner’s relationship quickly deteriorated. Hardy discovered that he had lost control of the corporation.

According to several accounts, he may have lost control of the company in a poker game, or he had a wild night of drinking that led to him signing away the company in a lawyer’s office late one night.

The real explanation may never be known, but a remark Hardy made probably reveals what happened. “If you want to know the truth, I was stupid… you know how it is…you make mistakes,” he said.

Hardee’s name was sold for $20,000 in the end. Rawls and Gardner sold their first franchises to a small group of longstanding friends and acquaintances who created their own businesses and built hundreds more franchised locations over time.

In 1963, Rawls became president of Hardee’s food systems, which went public. Gardner, the company’s vice president, had political ambitions and resigned after he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1966.

The company had approximately 200 restaurants in the Midwest and Southwest of the United States by the end of the 1960s, as well as its first foreign outlet in Germany.

Hardee’s bought Sandi’s in the early 1970s, and by 1979, all of the locations had been converted to Hardee’s. Hardee’s made another acquisition in the late 1970s when it bought the Utah-based burger brand Deez drivin. Due to its two major sandwiches, the large twin and the big deluxe, Hardy enjoyed rapid chain growth and significant profitability from the mid to late 1970s.

The Hardee’s brand grew even more in the 1980s. Hardee’s was purchased by Canadian corporation Amasco Limited in 1981, while Burger Chef was purchased from General Foods in 1982 for 44 million dollars.

Many of the Burger Chef restaurants were later converted to Hardy by the new parent company in Amasco. Acquisitions continued until the 1990s, with Hardee’s acquiring Roy Rogers locations and CKE restaurants Holdings acquiring Amasco and the Hardee’s change for $327 million.

Carl’s jr parent business is CKE Restaurants Holding, which stands for Carl Karcher Enterprises, which explains why the two restaurant brands are so similar, but that’s a story for another day. CKE had over 3,600 Hardee’s franchisees operating in 44 states and 37 countries as of March 2016.

Well, what happened to the man who started it all, Wilbur Hardy? Wilbur Hardy got back to doing what he did best, developing restaurants, after selling his Romanian holding in his namesake. He started the Little Mint chain of food shops, and when the company went public, he made almost two million dollars.

Hardy had his highs and lows over the next 15 years, selling one business, beginning another, and living luxuriously. He remarried a profoundly devout woman with whom he finally founded a ministry after losing his first love of 35 years.

We hope you’ve found the information useful in regards to Hardee’s breakfast opening and closing hours in 2021.
